CCleaner Not Opening on Windows 11? 6 Fixes That Work
You double-click CCleaner and nothing happens. No window, no error message, no splash screen. Click again and still nothing.
In most cases this is one of four things, and the fix takes under two minutes. The fixes below are ordered by how often they work and how little they risk — start at the top and stop when the program opens.
Before you begin, one worthwhile check: open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and look under Processes. If you can see CCleaner64.exe already running, the program did launch — its window just never appeared. That tells you to go straight to Fix 1.
Fix 1 — End the stuck process
This is the most common cause by a distance. A previous session did not close cleanly, the process is still held in memory, and Windows refuses to start a second copy.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Click the Details tab (on Windows 11, you may need More details first).
- Sort by Name and look for
CCleaner64.exe— also check forCCleaner.exeandCCUpdate.exe. - Right-click each one and choose End task.
- Launch CCleaner again.
If you cannot find the process, a plain restart of the PC does the same job less precisely. Worth doing before anything more involved.
Fix 2 — Run it as administrator
CCleaner touches protected system areas. If it cannot get permission, it can fail silently rather than prompting.
Right-click the CCleaner shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If it opens, make the change permanent:
- Right-click the shortcut → Properties.
- Compatibility tab.
- Tick Run this program as an administrator.
- Apply → OK.
Fix 3 — Check whether the shortcut is the problem
A broken desktop shortcut looks identical to a broken program. This test separates the two in about fifteen seconds.
Open File Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Program Files\CCleaner\
Double-click CCleaner64.exe directly.
- It opens — your shortcut is broken. Delete it, then right-click
CCleaner64.exe→ Send to → Desktop (create shortcut). Done. - It does not open — the installation itself has a problem. Continue to Fix 4.
Fix 4 — Your antivirus is blocking it
Because CCleaner deletes files and edits the registry, security software sometimes treats it as suspicious and blocks it silently.
To add an exclusion in Windows Security:
- Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security.
- Virus & threat protection → under Virus & threat protection settings, click Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions → Add an exclusion → Folder.
- Select
C:\Program Files\CCleaner.
If you run third-party antivirus, check its quarantine log — CCleaner may be sitting in it. The quickest diagnostic is to disable real-time protection for two minutes and try launching. If it opens, you have your answer. Turn protection back on immediately either way.
Fix 5 — Clean reinstall
If the first four did not work, the installation is damaged.
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find CCleaner, click the three dots → Uninstall.
- Restart the PC. Do not skip this — it releases files the uninstaller could not remove.
- Download a fresh installer only from ccleaner.com.
- Right-click the installer → Run as administrator.
- Watch the installer screens and untick any bundled extras — the free version offers additional software during setup.
On download sources: install CCleaner only from the official site. Third-party download portals host outdated builds and installers repackaged with unwanted software. This is not a theoretical concern — it is the most common way people end up with adware alongside a legitimate program.
Fix 6 — Clean boot test
Rarely needed, but it isolates a conflicting background service.
- Press Win + R, type
msconfig, press Enter. - Services tab → tick Hide all Microsoft services → Disable all.
- Startup tab → Open Task Manager → disable every startup item.
- Restart and try CCleaner.
If it opens in this state, something you disabled was the culprit. Re-enable items in small groups, restarting between each, until the problem returns. Remember to undo the msconfig changes when you are finished.
A question worth asking: do you still need it?
Worth saying plainly, because most troubleshooting guides will not.
Windows 11 includes Storage Sense (Settings → System → Storage), which clears temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule and removes old Windows update files. For the large majority of users this covers what they were using CCleaner for.
Registry cleaning — the feature CCleaner is best known for — delivers no measurable performance benefit on a modern Windows install, and carries a small risk of removing something that mattered. Microsoft has not recommended registry cleaners for many years.
CCleaner remains genuinely useful for bulk uninstalling, managing startup programs, and wiping free space. If those are not what you use it for, the simplest fix to “CCleaner won’t open” may be not needing it to.
Frequently asked questions
Why does CCleaner not open on Windows 11?
Most often a stuck CCleaner64.exe process left over from the previous session. End it in Task Manager and relaunch. Other common causes are missing administrator permissions, antivirus blocking, a broken shortcut, or a corrupted install.
CCleaner opens but closes immediately. What now?
That usually points to a damaged installation or antivirus terminating it after launch. Check your antivirus quarantine first, then do the clean reinstall in Fix 5.
Is CCleaner safe to use?
The official build from ccleaner.com is legitimate software. Two cautions: download only from the official site, and untick bundled extras during installation. The registry cleaning feature provides no measurable speed benefit on modern Windows.
Will reinstalling CCleaner delete my settings?
Yes — custom cleaning rules and excluded items are lost on uninstall. If you have a configuration you rely on, export it from Options → Advanced before uninstalling, if the program will open long enough to do so.
If none of this worked
Check Windows Update — a pending update can leave applications in an odd state until it completes. Then contact CCleaner support through the official site, telling them your Windows build number (Win + R, type winver) and exactly which of these steps you have already tried. It will save a round of correspondence.
